Wuerzburg – Rothenburg ob der Tauber (D)
start of our tour: 09:00 a.m. in Wuerzburg (arrival by own arrangements)
In the morning, enjoy a guided tour of Wuerzburg and its magnificent Prince Bishops' Residence, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Afterwards, free time for lunch and/ or leisure activities. Our journey continues down the Tauber Valley to Weikersheim. A tour of the Renaissance castle with its wonderful ornamental garden will be followed by a visit to the fascinating thimble museum which will prove of particular interest to female participants. Later, we will reach our today's destination, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany’s well-preserved ‘Jewel of the Middle Ages‘. Check in at our hotel in the Old Town. In the evening, after our Franconian meal, stroll around the town with Rothenburg's famous Night Watchman.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber – Augsburg
After the breakfast, trip through the Frankenhoehe nature park to Feuchtwangen. Visit the Romanesque cloisters and the craftsmen's rooms. The tour continues down the valley of Woernitz to Dinkelsbuehl where we will have a change of our means of transport: Discover the secrets of this medieval town in a covered wagon! Free time and opportunity to have lunch before we move on to the former free imperial town of Noerdlingen. You can decide whether to climb up the ‘Daniel’, the tower of church St. Georg, or go for a walk round the Old Town wall. On our way towards Augsburg, we will do photo stops in Harburg, Donauwoerth and Rain. Wind down the day in the centre of Augsburg, more than 2000 years old, tasting some typical Swabian specialities.
Augsburg – Hohenschwangau
Today, join a tour of the town with a visit to the ‘Fuggerei’, the first ever social housing complex in the world. Travelling via Friedberg you will go on to Landsberg am Lech with its pretty little historical centre which you will be able to explore independently. In the early afternoon, we travel on to an area known as Pfaffenwinkel with a visit to the world-famous church Wieskirche, also UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our tour continues to the foothills of the Buchenberg, the gateway to the Ammergebirge nature reserve. Our today's destination is Bavaria's highest-lying town, Fuessen, with neighbouring Schwangau for our dinner and overnight stay.
After an extensive breakfast buffet, we will finally see the two royal palaces: Hohenschwangau, family home of King Ludwig II, and – located on the rugged hill above the town – breathtaking Neuschwanstein, the first building project of the so-called ‘Fairytale King’. Our exciting journey ends after the guided tours at midday.
